Estimulo is an avid record digger and die-hard
music aficionado with extensive vaults of records
since the late 80s. In his club DJ sets he’s on the lookout for those special moments of dancefloor salvation, oscillating between Deep House and Techno’s classics and more obscure electronic treasures, with splashes of Electro & Disco / Funk and with an extended perspective on genres and epochs not forgetting recent and upcoming gems. It’s not purely a
retrofuturistic thing, rather he strives to connect music of different epochs to form a holistic flow. His special passion is to make his own edits / versions of the music he loves. With his label Mixomat Recordings (founded in 2004) he has been putting out early releases by artists such as
Marco Nega, immer.Chic (Workshop), Rezkar (Running Back, Meakusma) and Serendipity/Rai Scott (Inner Shift Music / 2DeepSoul).
His weekly Radio Show (EstimuloShow @ mixomat.org since 2007, also on Cashmere Radio since 2017) is regarded as a mainstay by many in the scene.
The last years have seen Estimulo taking the vibe to places like the US, Chile, Argentina, Australia, UK, France, Canada, Norway, Poland, Ukraine and Jordan on his DJ tours.
Estimulo used to co-run the futura event agency and DJ crew, that has been causing some stir in the Berlin scene with their proceedings in beloved underground spots like ://about blank, Paloma, Horst and Chez Jacki/Maria am Ostbahnhof.

Very short and crunchy:
Estimulo, member of the futura (www.futuraberlin.de) event and DJ crew (2008-2012), that has been causing some furor in the Berlin scene with their events in spots like ://about blank, Horst and Chez Jacki. As a DJ he’s always on the lookout for those special moments of dancefloor salvation, oscillating between Disco and House Classics, with a splash of classic Electro Funk. With his label Mixomat Recordings (founded in 2004) he has been putting out early releases by artists such as Marco Nega, immer.Chic, Rezkar and Serendipity. His weekly Internet Radio Show (EstimuloShow) is regarded as a mainstay for those who count themselves to the deeper House circles. The last years have seen Estimulo taking this vibe to places like the UK, France, Canada, Norway, Poland, Ukraine and Jordan on his DJ tours.
Summary: Estimulo caught the music bug in the age of 4, when black and dance groups like Chic appealed to him thru the airwaves of Berlin city. Quickly he started recording music from the radio and cutting his own radio shows and mixes and a tape recorder and reel to reel. Later on in 1983 his grandma gave him what was to become his first vinyl record by legendary hip hop group Whodini. Disco, Soul and Electro Funk were the main influences until in 1988 he first heard a programme called “The Big Beat” that aired on friday night and was pumping all the hot import shit, from HINRG to early house music. Apart from radio, a random find a random find of Chicago House artist Mr Fingers seminal “Ammnesia” album in the bargain bin of some music store in 1989 started his voyage into classic house and techno, mainly from the USA. In 1991 the techno scene exploded in Berlin and the sound was getting harder and harder. Though he was interested in the scene and went to many of the parties, he was naturally drawn towards a deeper and more soulful side of things. He set up his own little pirate station and broadcasted all kinds of electronic beats to his neighborhood. Aside from studying Computer Engineering he was taking first steps into production with the famous Fasttracker software on the Amiga and PC. Putting mixes online followed and in 2001 the mixomat.de page was launched to feature his mixes, followed by the label Mixomat Recordings which released the music of Marco Nega, Immer.Chic, Igor O. Vlasov, Rezkar and Serendipity, just to name a few. In 2007 he moved back to his passion for radio and founded the weekly internet radio show called “EstimuloShow”. EstimuloShow has grown into a world-wide collective featuring such presenters as Malcolm Moore (Altered Moods), Truly-Madly, Mike Bishop, Chicagodeep & Taelue and Mick Welch (Elektrosouls Recordings) alongside Estimulo & Makarov. What is more, EstimuloShow has featured guest DJ performances by artists such as Chicago Skyway (Eargasmic, Uzuri), Specter (Tetrode Music, Downbeat), Steven Tang (Emphasis), Simoncino (Mathematics, HotMix, No More Hits). In the past years Estimulo has played venues such as ://about blank, Horst, Paloma Bar, Südblock, Chez Jacki (ex-Maria am Ostbahnhof), Champagneria, Freudenzimmer and Diller as a DJ. The Futura event organisation agency was launched in 2008, to host events in ://about blank, Horst as well as Chez Jacki and M12, and to bring artists like Lowtec (Workshop, USM), Even Tuell (Airbag Craftworks), Keith Worthy (Aesthetic Audio), Gerd Janson (Running Back), I-F (Intergalactic FM, Viewlexx), Arne Weinberg (AW-Recordings, Diametric), Fabrice Lig (R&S, F Communications, Versatile), Rune Lindbaek (Noid, Smalltown Supersound), Simoncino (Mathematics, HotMix, OTP), Kuba Sojka (Mathematics), Malcolm Moore (Altered Moods), Snuff Crew (Snuff Trax, Gigolo, Skylax, Nature) and Hardrock Striker (Skylax) to Berlin on their club nights.
The last years have seen Estimulo taking this vibe to places like the UK, France, Canada, Norway, Poland, Ukraine and Jordan on his DJing tours.
Full Version
Estimulo (real name Andreas Stolzenberg) started listening to music in the age of 4, when he recorded music from the radio (mostly RIAS Berlin, FM station of the US-Army in Berlin), cutting them, producing his own radio shows containing his favorite tunes and announcing them. In the year of 1978, the musical taste was still quite undefined and broad, but the music by black r&b/disco bands like ”Chic” and ”Kool and the Gang” drew his attention to them.
Later on, in 1983, he got presented his first vinyl 7” single by his grandmother. It was ”The Haunted House of Rock” by Whodini. Since then, Estimulo started to record everything from the radio which sounded electronic and groovy. A big influence was the NY and LA electro-funk as well as black music in general. But there was still no special radio show for this kind of music, so it took until 1988 when he first heard the sounds of a radio show called ”The Big Beat on Fridays”, that aired on friday night and was pumping all the hot import shit, from disco to early house music, soul and funk, rap.
He couldn’t get enough of sample house tracks from the UK like MARRS ”Pump up the volume”, Coldcut ”Doctorin’ The House”, Bomb the Bass ”Beat Dis”, etc which meanwhile also aired on normal mainsteam radio during the daytime, becoming major pop hits in Germany as well as in the UK.
Desperately Estimulo started searching for any ”house” record he could get a hold of, but he wasn’t very lucky in this time. So the radio with shows like ”Big Beat”, run by the visionary Monika Dietl, as well as Marusha’s show on the GDR station ”DT 64” remained the main source for the new sounds as well as a random find of Mr Fingers seminal “Ammnesia” album in the bargain bin of some music store in 1989.
As techno exploded in Berlin after the wall came down, the sound was getting harder and harder. Though he made some excursions into hard techno, gabber, etc. he always felt unsatisfied with the lack of soul in this kind of music, so he got focussed on US (mostly deep) House and Detroit Techno and started buying records, which was possible because meanwhile some specialist record shops for this kind of music had opened in Berlin. Every single cent of rare pocket money was spent for music, music and only music.
In 1990, Estimulo set up his own little FM pirate station to broadcast electronic beats of all kinds to the neighborhood. The station had a range of about 1 kilometer, so it was mostly his friends who tuned in. Still he got busted after just a few months and the police took all his equipment. Being a programmer and electronics tinkerer, he didn’t take long to replace it and went on broadcasting for some years.
The years from 1994 on were spent with studying at the university (computer engineering) and buying and listening to music most of the time, wandering thru the realms of all house genres, techno, drum & bass, breakbeat, jungle, hardcore techno, industrial, dub reggae, digital dub, ambient, lounge, trip hop, basically everything electronic except for a short excursion to punk. First tracks were produced around 1990 on a very simple Amiga500 setup with a very simple program which could basically only play drums and some noises.
Later in 1993, the first tracks with the famous ”Fasttracker” on the PC were created. Always being more a DJ and selector & collector than a musician, though he was playing flute and guitar for quite a long period in his childhood, he started to produce mixes and publish them on his personal webpage at the university. There was almost no response at all. In 2001, Estimulo met SpIn and they had the idea of setting up a professional page to release their mixes.
Mixomat became a success from the start, getting highest acknowledgement in the deepest of deep house circles for the quality of the mixes and the selection of timeless, sensual and passionate music.
Estimulo’s label Mixomat Recordings which was starte up in 2005 managed to successfully launch and distribute up and coming artists like Marco Nega, Immer.Chic, Igor O. Vlasov and Serendipity who all got the chance to release their music on vinyl with other labels later on as well as early work by Rezkar, who is now one of the hottest talents in Deep House with releases on Altered Moods, Meakusma and Running Back.
In 2007 Estimulo felt it’s time to move back to his interest and passion for making radio so he started to broadcast a weekly show simply called the ”EstimuloShow” in Summer of 2007. The word of the show of featuring quality music spread fast around the deep house community and the show grew from being a stand-alone showcase of Estimulo’s record collection to a global affair, including many known und unknown DJ talents who all have in common that passion for the deeper sounds of house and techno. Even disco and jazz-funk can have their place on the show, it’s all good as long as it’s deep but it does have a definite focus on electronic music. Regular presenters on the EstimuloShow are Malcolm Moore (Altered Moods), Truly-Madly, Mike Bishop, Chicagodeep & Taelue and Mick Welch (Elektrosouls Recordings) alongside Estimulo & Makarov.
Estimulo’s core styles are deep house and deep techno with an open interface towards jazz, funk and dub. It’s largely instrumental, but everything is possible as long as it fits into the flow.
In the past 4 years EstimuloShow has featured (amongst others) guest DJs such as TomTomGroove, Mo’Joe, Marcustic, Keep:On DJ Team (Jochen Otto, Christophe Degars, Maciej Szalonek), Annette Sihler, Tanja Harde, Kandismann, Pinky Chukkles (tiptopmusic.com), Conradio (tiptopmusic.com) from London and Linley from Toronto. The past 2 years saw guest DJs such as Chicago Skyway (Eargasmic, Uzuri), Specter (Tetrode Music, Downbeat), Steven Tang (Emphasis), Simoncino (Mathematics, HotMix, No More Hits). EstimuloShow had a live performance by Dekay (Danny Kotz). The EstimuloShow webpage and archives can be found at www.mixomat.org.
Estimulo played as a DJ alongside Malcolm Moore and Brad Peterson (Moods and Grooves) on the Altered Moods Deep Summit 2008 Tour in Hafen2 (Offenbach/Germany) and Sanatorium 23 (Berlin/Germany) and in 2009 alongside Mike Bishop, Truly-Madly and Malcolm Moore in Berghain Kantine, Diller and Lily Lounge in Toronto. In the past years Estimulo has played venues such as ://about blank, Horst, Paloma Bar, Südblock, Chez Jacki (ex-Maria am Ostbahnhof), Champagneria, Freudenzimmer and Diller.
